Legally Compliant Use of the Digital Tachograph
Pursuant to Article 33 of Regulation (EU) No 165/2014, transport companies are obliged to regularly instruct and train their drivers on the proper use of the digital tachograph. 
Since the introduction of the digital recording equipment in 2006, the statutory regulations regarding its use have been continuously tightened. In parallel, the technology has evolved rapidly. As a result, a wide variety of device generations from different manufacturers exist on the market today, some of which differ drastically in their operation and functions.
With the introduction of the smart tachograph (VDO 4.0) and the latest advancement to the smart tachograph version 2 (VDO 4.1), the most modern generation of devices has been in use since August 2023.
Without targeted training, it is almost impossible for driving personnel to apply all device-specific differences and functions without error.
